The first American rock band to chart Top 40 albums in five decades, Chicago’s far-reaching list of creative and commercial accomplishments includes: a Grammy Award, multiple American Music Awards, record sales in excess of 100 million, 21 Top 10 singles, and five consecutive No. 1 albums, with an incredible 25 albums earning platinum certification.
However, the story of Chicago starts with the band itself, one of the most diversified, motivated and individually talented lineups ever assembled. Chicago was founded in 1967 by Walt Parazaider (woodwinds), James Pankow (trombone), Lee Loughnane (trumpet), Roert Lamm (keyboards/lead vocals), Terry Kath (guitar/lead vocals), and Danny Seraphine (drums).
The ensemble's self-titled 1969 debut marked the first of three double LPs that would start a peerless career. Their breakthrough sophomore release, Chicago II, was the first to carry their trademark logo and delivered more timeless hits like "Make Me Smile," "Colour My World" and "25 or 6 to 4." It also upped the artistic ante with its “Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon,” a suite of pop songs emulating the form of the great classical composers.
Chicago II was the second chapter in a long line of multiplatinum smash albums for Chicago which began in 1969. Featuring the original award winning line-up of Robert Lamm (lead vocals/keyboards), Peter Cetera (lead vocals/bass), Terry Kath (lead vocals/guitars), the legendary horns of James Pankow (trombone), Lee Loughnane (trumpet), Walter Parazaider (saxophone/woodwinds), plus Danny Seraphine (drums), Chicago II is undoubtedly one of the biggest selling albums of the classic rock era and also one of the most revered offerings in their huge catalog. Buoyed by the success of huge hit singles like Make Me Smile, 25 or 6 to 4 and Colour My World, Chicago’s stunning follow-up to their debut smash Chicago Transit Authority was filled with so many great songs, it could be its own greatest hits collection.
Further smashes like the powerful It Better End Soon suite, the stellar Wake Up Sunshine plus the late Terry Kath masterwork In the Country all truly make this fine album even more of a treasure trove of classic rock enjoyment.
