Rarely has a record label been so influential and so associated with trend-setting recording techniques for its time as Everest Records. Hollywood sound man Harry Belock and audio dealer-engineer Bert Whyte started the label as the stereo era dawned. They acquired 3-channel 35mm magnetic film recording equipment in 1959, and through the early '60s recorded in this fashion, as did Mercury Records.

Now, return with us, as Classic Records by Analogue Productions returns this vintage audiophile collection to its rightful glory.

Everest LPs through the early 1960s were recorded on 3-channel 35mm magnetic film recording equipment. 35mm magnetic film yielded greater fidelity and less noise than standard 1/4" recording tape. The Westrex Corporation built special equipment to Everest's specifications to accomplish these advantages.

Fast forward to today: Classic Records by Analogue Productions is resurrecting this collection through an initial 10-title reissue series. Bernie Grundman cut the Classic Records reissues at both 33 and 45 RPM — the 45 RPM versions have never been reissued!

Quality Record Pressings 200-gram flat profile LPs — These records are pressed with a flat-edge, no groove-guard flat profile, like the originals. The flat edge refers to the absence of a raised, beaded lip on the outer edge of the record, providing a flat playing surface - and no incline — on your turntable.

This, Sibelius' only violin concerto, was completed in 1903 and contains segments that require virtuosity to do full justice to its technical and interpretive intricacies. Tossy Spivakovsky provides such a virtuoso, as he plays violin on this Everest recording of Tauno Hannikainen conducting The London Symphony Orchestra.

"Recording technology at the start of the 21st century is probably the best that can be achieved, but a steady flow of historic audiophile reissues demonstrates that the improvement of sound quality has been a decades-long quest, and the first superb efforts are still worth hearing today. Violinist Tossy Spivakovsky and the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Tauno Hannikainen, recorded Jean Sibelius' Violin Concerto in D minor, along with the orchestral tone poem Tapiola, on 35mm three-track magnetic film, and the 1960 recording is so clear and realistic that hearing it is almost as good as attending a concert. Recording with 35mm film had several points in its favor, because it offered three times the surface of standard quarter-inch tape, its thickness permitted the recording of higher sound levels without imprinting other parts of the film, and the sprocket holes along its sides allowed smooth playback with almost no noise or distortion. Because of this innovative method, the sound is quite vivid and realistic and the listener perceives the full color and richness of the orchestra, while Spivakovsky's violin is so direct that it seems to be placed front and center." - Blair Sanderson, All Music
