Masahiko Togashi, born 1940 in Tokyo, was acclaimed as a jazz drummer from his teens, when he played in Sadao Watanabe's group. He was a pivotal figure alongside Masahiko Sato, Masayuki Takayanagi and Yosuke Yamashita in the development of free jazz in Japan in the late 1960's. Togashi has collaborated with many overseas jazzmen, including Don Chery, Steve Lacy, Charlie Haden, Mal Waldron and Paul Bley.

This early japanese Free Jazz LP was originally recorded for a movie by Masao Adachi - "Renzoku Shasatsuma (Ryakusho)". But it certainly works without the pictures. A classic recording - not only from Japan!

1969 was the year free improvisation took off in Japan, and this soundtrack album is one of the sparks which lit the flame. Isolation was originally commissioned as a soundtrack to a 'landscape film' entitled Abbreviated Serial Killer, focused on one Norio Nagayama. Masahiko Togayashi teamed up with Motoki Takagi and the duo thought it better to approach the subject without attempting any composition. In the process the two pioneers of free jazz created a landmark work which stands as one of the all-time most important documents of Japanese free jazz.
