The original Candid label lasted a mere four years, from 1960 to 1964, but its 30-some LPs played a worthy role in fusing the period's music, mainly modern jazz but also blues, with the burgeoning civil rights movement. Candid achieved legendary status, the series was born in 1960 when Archie Bleyer decided to indulge his love of jazz and blues and create his own releases, produced by Nat Hentoff.

The original Candid record label lasted a mere four years, from 1960 to '64, and its 30-some LPs played a worthy role in fusing the period's music — mainly modern jazz but also blues — with the burgeoning civil rights movement.

The American Candid label has achieved a near legendary status among the critics and the International jazz and blues public. The series was born in 1960 when Archie Bleyer, owner of the Cadence label decided to indulge his love of jazz and blues and create his own line — called Candid. Bleyer recruited Hentoff to produce the series.

Recorded with Mingus' greatest sidemen, Eric Dolphy and Booker Ervin. The second of Mingus' revered Candid albums! Remastered from the original analog tapes by Bernie Grundman

The recordings Charles Mingus made for Candid Records have become the stuff of legend. The first time he was given complete creative freedom in the studio, Mingus took full advantage, pushing his band — and himself — to new heights while charting the path jazz would take over the next decade.

Mingus is the second of the albums produced during those sessions and stands proudly alongside Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus as an essential, immersive trip into Mingus' singular genius. Out of print for nearly
40 years, the revitalized Candid Records has gone back to the original art and the original master tape for a reissue arguably better than any of the copies trading for hundreds online.

Pressed here on 180-gram vinyl, Bernie Grundman's mastering brings Mingus back to life as fiercely as he must have been in New York's Nola Penthouse Studios all those years ago.

At the time of this recording, Mingus had been working regularly with the piano-less quartet of Eric Dolphy, Ted Curson and Dannie Richmond. The same group featured on the 1960 Candid release, Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus. The Mingus album, also recorded that year, features one track, "Stormy Weather," recorded with that same quartet, and two tracks recorded with a larger group featuring piano and additional horns.

Of note, "MDM (Monk Duke & Me)” consumes the majority of this album. The piece consists of three intertwining themes - Duke Ellington's “Main Stem”, Thelonious Monk's “Straight, No Chaser”, and Mingus' “Fifty First Street Blues.”

Released in 1961, and recorded in the fall of 1960 by Candid A&R and Producer Nate Hentoff at the Nola Penthouse Sound Studios.

The LP includes extraordinary liner notes written by Hentoff, giving a context and insight that adds to the experience of hearing these magnificent performances.
