I Didn't Know About You is the 1990 recording by the Archie Shepp Quartet. Archie Shepp plays the tenor and alto-saxophone, Horace Parlan on piano, Wayne Dockery on bass and George Brown on drums.
Compositions include the modern jazz interpretation of the traditional "Go Down Moses (Let My People Go)", the Duke Ellington written "I Didn't Know About You", Charlie Parker's "Now's The Time" plus three more tracks.
I Didn't Know About You is available on vinyl for the first time as a limited edition of 500 individually numbered copies on yellow coloured vinyl.
"A strong effort by Shepp, who is reunited with pianist Horace Parlan and joined by bassist Wayne Dockery and drummer George Brown for a an eight-track set recorded in Germany. The highlight is clearly the sole track with Parlan in which they perform Monk's "Ask Me Now" both effectively and emotionally. The version of "Go Down Moses (Let My People Go)" is a winner for Shepp's glorious baritone vocals and his saxophone solo. The excellent choice of tunes (including Duke Ellington's "I Didn't Know About You," Todd Dameron's "Hot House," and Bird's "Now the Time") presents Shepp in a fine light, where he blows both tenor and alto saxophones." - Steve Loewy
It was 1975 when Wim Wigt founded Timeless Records with the help of his wife Ria. Wim was a renowned agent and jazz musician. Wim's career in music was initiated as a hobby that got out of hand. Wim and Ria organized concerts and small tours throughout the Netherlands, but at the request of many American jazz musicians, their business went international and grew exponentially. They worked with Machito, Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, set up numerous tours for Art Blakey, Chet Baker, Toots Thielemans, Pharoah Sanders, and organized concerts with Dionne Warwick, Chuck Berry, The Hollies, Alan Parsons, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, George Benson and Nina Simone. To top things off, Wim and Ria acted as management during Chet Baker's latter years, which are also seen as Baker's most prolific years.
During those same years, Wim and Ria founded Timeless Records. Their first release was Cedar Walton's Eastern Rebellion, which is considered by many as one of the best bebopjazz recordings from the seventies. As of 2020 - 45 years later - the label had issued some 900 releases and founded three sub-labels, including Limetree Records. Notable releases include Dizzy Gillespie Meets Phil Woods Quintet, McCoy Tyner's Bon Voyage, Lou Donaldson's Forgotten Man, and albums by the George Adams-Don Pullen Quartet, Chet Baker, Bill Evans and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.
To celebrate the 45th anniversary of Timeless Records, Music On Vinyl is releasing a special jazz series to honor the legacy that the label has built over the past decades.
“Our philosophy is always to bring quality music of great talents that will live on in the future, hence our labels name Timeless Records. We are happy to celebrate our 45 anniversary in this way and hope this collaboration with MOV and MOCD will reach new listeners.” - Wim and Ria Wigt
