"I have two black Vanguard Stereolab 'originals.' One mastered and processed by RCA, which was small Vanguard's 'go-to' mastering and pressing house (my copy was pressed at RCA's Rockaway, NJ pressing plant), and the other a Columbia mastering (1D/1J) that takes the warmth and turns it into muffled and somewhat distant. Neither copy can match the quiet surfaces of this reissue, which I consider to be essential for any 'well-rounded' AAA record collection." — Music = 10/11; Sound = 9/11 — Michael Fremer, Analog Planet
Recorded for the venerable Vanguard label in 1960 when she was just 19 years old, singer/songwriter/activist Joan Baez's landmark self-titled debut opened the world's eyes to a soprano so pure and beguiling that the mere act of listening to her – never mind that her music also packed a powerful message – was a true pleasure. Bearing twin passions of folk music and humanist causes, the traditional songs in Baez's repertoire all dealt with the human condition – underdogs in the fight, inequity among the races, the desperation of poverty, the futility of war, romantic betrayal, unrequited love, spiritual redemption and grace – themes which have been at the forefront of her work, both on and off the stage throughout her life.
Many songs that Baez introduced here also found their way into the rock vernacular including "House Of the Rising Sun" (the Animals) and "John Riley" (the Byrds). Joan's sublime 1960 debut was honored by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences in 2011, who inducted it into the Grammy Hall Of Fame; and by the Library of Congress in 2015, who selected it to be preserved in the National Recording Registry. Long out of print on vinyl, this new 180g LP reissue is cut from the original stereo tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, pressed and plated at RTI and housed in a Stoughton old-style tip-on jacket.
