Buena Vista Social Club, the Grammy Award-winning 1997 World Circuit album produced by Ry Cooder, is the biggest-selling world music album ever, with more than eight million records sold to date. The Cuban musicians from the album played a sold-out, one-night-only concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall on July 1,1998. The footage of that show became the climax of the acclaimed 1999 Wim Wenders documentary about the musicians and their compelling story, also called Buena Vista Social Club.

Ten years later, that evening’s historic performance is released by World Circuit meticulously mixed and mastered by Cooder and World Circuit label head Nick Gold (who executive produced the 1997 album). It will feature performances by the original Buena Vista Social Club musicians including Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, Ruben González, Eliades Ochoa, Omara Portuondo, Cachaíto López, and Guajiro Mirabal. Though all of these musicians subsequently went on to resurrect great solo careers, the intervening years have brought the loss of Ferrer, Segundo and González. Buena Vista Social Club at Carnegie Hall is only the second release for the original members, whose legendary studio album became a phenomenon throughout the world.

“The concert was more than a musical occasion. Musicians from Cuba in their 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, some emerging from retirement, were making their United States debuts at no less than Carnegie Hall. With the bittersweet delicacy of a classic bolero, the Buena Vista Social Club simultaneously celebrated the vitality and virtuosity of its musicians and mourned the era they embody.” - The New York Times

Buena Vista Social Club At Carnegie Hall is only the second album ever released by the original Buena Vista Social Club; this extraordinary collection of Cuba's greatest musicians includes Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Eliades Ochoa, Omara Portuondo, Compay Segundo, Cachaíto López and Guajiro Mirabal. The Carnegie Hall concert was a unique event that can never be repeated. It was the focus of the Wim Wenders award winning film which has helped spread the story of the incredible characters that made up the band. 2008 marks the 10th anniversary of the Carnegie Hall concert.

Produced by Ry Cooder and the same talented team that produced the studio album, it includes previously unpublished photographs from the concert and a 4,000 word sleeve note by Ry Cooder and the musicians themselves. The performances on the album are absolutely brilliant and capture a collective enthusiasm, warmth, energy and feeling of triumph that was felt together by both audience and band that special night back in 1998.

"It seems very strange that World Circuit would wait ten long years to issue this historic document of the grand, wildly celebrated Buena Vista Social Club concert at Carnegie Hall. This is the very show so wonderfully and artfully detailed by filmmaker Wim Wenders in his documentary on the project that reunited these then-obscure Cuban music legends for an album and a tour and catapulted them to worldwide fame. Perhaps it was worth the wait; perhaps this music should have been in our midst all along. Of the four older legends, those who had made music together in Cuba before Castro, only Omara Portuondo remains on the Earth, and she is still quite active. The other three, vocalist Ibrahim Ferrer, pianist Rubén González, and guitarist and vocalist Compay Segundo, have passed away - Segundo lived to be 96! The youngster of the group, guitarist Eliades Ochoa, continues to record and tour." - Thom Jurek
