Originally released in 1972, Space Walk was the last album recorded by legendary British saxophonist Don Rendell at the famed Lansdowne Studios. Reissued for the first time on LP in a strictly limited edition, Space Walk shows Don Rendell continuing to build on the distinctive sound he developed as part of the legendary Rendell-Carr Quintet, the leading British modern jazz group of the 1960s.
Space Walk was released as part of the Lansdowne Series, which also includes exceptional recordings by Neil Ardley, Mike Taylor, Joe Harriott, Stan Tracey, and of course the Don Rendell - Ian Carr Quintet. The Lansdowne Series effectively formed the backbone of progressive British modern jazz in the 1960s and early 1970s. Produced by Denis Preston, Space Walk covers swinging post-bop and modal jazz. Joining the band are Don's longtime bandmate Trevor Tomkins on drums, British saxophonist and flutist Stan Robinson, the swinging vibraphone of Peter Shade, and Australian musician Jack Thorncroft on bass. The addition of second saxophone and flute, as well as vibraphone, adds an extra dimension, depth of texture and color to the group, and the pieces really jump off the record. The changing time signatures, modes and styles throughout the album make it an extremely enjoyable experience. The title track is great dance jazz with Peter Shade's vibraphone taking center stage, but every track is a winner with the entire first side featuring original compositions by Rendell
"Space Walk" was licensed directly from the estate of Don Rendell and appears in a laminated, hand-glued flip-back sleeve. Vinyl audio remastered & cut from the original master tapes by Gearbox Records.
