Following the dissolution of the Islands line-up Robert Fripp decided to assemble a new band to perform the sort of music he’d been hearing in his head over recent months. In the summer of 1972 the line-up of Fripp together with Bill Bruford (late of Yes), John Wetton, Jamie Muir and relative newcomer David Cross was announced, although it was not until September, after first full band rehearsals, that the decision was taken to call the group King Crimson.

Even by the standards of King Crimson, the line-up was short-lived, but the legacy of that band has survived and thrived for four decades. Most of the material on the album quickly became established as part of the live set with tracks like the title track & ‘Talking Drum’ often becoming the start points/springboard for the improvisations integral to Crimson’s performances. ‘Larks’ Tongues II’ was one of the few pieces of the era to be performed regularly by the 80s lineup & also became a favorite of audiences & band alike for the double trio Crimson lineup of the 90s.

Larks’ is the first part of a trilogy that also encompassed “Starless & Bible Black” & “Red” – a body of work that still sounds remarkable some 40 years later. The albums have been consistent sellers from the point of release through to the present day.

Larks' Tongues in Aspic is the fifth in a series of King Crimson audiophile vinyl reissues. Newly cut from masters approved by Robert Fripp, this super-heavyweight 200g vinyl pressing is housed in a reprint of the original sleeve. With its raw tone, inspired improvisations and hard hitting odd-metered rhythms, the album marked a radical departure for this most forward thinking of groups and was the first to include Bill Bruford and John Wetton as band members.

"King Crimson reborn yet again -- the then-newly configured band makes its debut with a violin (courtesy of David Cross) sharing center stage with Robert Fripp's guitars and his Mellotron, which is pushed into the background. The music is the most experimental of Fripp's career up to this time -- though some of it actually dated (in embryonic form) back to the tail-end of the Boz Burrell-Ian Wallace-Mel Collins lineup. And John Wetton was the group's strongest singer/bassist since Greg Lake's departure three years earlier. What's more, this lineup quickly established itself as a powerful performing unit, working in a more purely experimental, less jazz-oriented vein than its immediate predecessor.
